Creative Reclamation: Algonquin Photography Retreat

A 4-day adventure to reconnect with your camera, and nurture your creativity. This one sells out fast.

April 22 - 25, 2027

You used to love this.

Our Creative Reclamation Retreats are an immersive experience designed to nurture your creative spirit. In a world obsessed with the hustle, this weekend is an invitation to slow down, commit to the frame, and discover the profound difference between simply looking at a landscape and truly learning how to see it.

What is the Algonquin Creative Retreat?

Retreat Overview

April 22-25, 2027 | 4 days

Location: Northern Edge Algonquin, South River, Ontario

Prerequisite: This is not a beginner workshop. You will need to be shooting in priority or manual mode. We recommend our full-day learn manual workshop as a precursor to this retreat. You will also need to be familiar with editing (Lightroom Classic preferably, or other program you’re using). We can’t teach manual mode and editing (those are two separate workshops!).

All-inclusive: Includes all meals, accommodation, and programming. Private and shared accommodation options.

Group Size: Strictly limited to only 10 to allow for one-on-one support where needed.

Outcome: This retreat is about a permanent shift in how to see as a photographer. You’ll stop taking accidental snapshots once you learn how to see beyond just looking. Cobi is teaching creative techniques she learned in a 2-year diploma program that other photographers likely haven’t heard of.

Physical Rating

Moderate (there are some hiking inclines, and there could be paddling in a canoe for 1+ hour).

Investment

$x,xxx CAD. Early bird price: . Only 5 of those available. You will learn more over these 4 dedicated days than you will over a full year of sporadic outings.

Activities:

  • Photography (main focus)

  • Hiking

  • Canoeing (maybe)

  • Sauna

  • Watercolour painting

  • Time to slow down (in a world that devours our time, this is priceless)

“Cobi’s photography workshop strikes the perfect balance between theory and practice. The indoor presentations clearly illustrated what to look for, transitioning seamlessly into hands-on field instruction.

Set in a relaxed atmosphere conducive to learning, Cobi doesn't force a rigid style; instead, she guides you to find the unique composition that speaks to you. She was incredibly approachable, always open to questions on techniques and suggestions. I left with greater confidence and highly recommend attending these workshops!”

Retreat Features

Time Outdoors

Four days spent mostly outside breathing in that Algonquin air, with a chance to finally take as long as you need to get your framing right, and make the photograph. No one is hustling you along here. It’s all about photography!

Sunrise & Night Sky Photography

On land or canoe, we’ll catch the morning sunrise each morning. First blue hour, then sunrise. Optional of course if your body is craving a sleep in. And if skies allow, we’ll do night photography or painting with light as an alternative.

Creative Image Evaluations

Each day you’ll submit images for a supportive and gentle evaluation. Surprisingly, this is usually everyone’s favourite part of a workshop or retreat!

Nourishing Meals

Amazing (and we mean amazing!) meals prepared with care from local ingredients and catered to a diverse range of dietary needs.

Mindful Connection

We’ll explore slow photography and how it can help you see and feel more deeply, to connect with what you’re photographing.

Dedicated Editing Time

After a full morning of photography programming and excursions, you will have dedicated time to edit your images. This is an opportunity to ask questions about editing. You should have a basic knowledge of editing already.

Well-Being

We believe that in order to take care of yourself, you need to do things that bring you joy. Lots of space during the retreat to lay in a hammock, sit on the dock, read a book, and just slow down in between program and photography sessions.

Creative Play

If you know anything about Spark, it’s that we love to break the rules. We believe that when you stop trying to be perfect, you start being creative. We give you permission to play! ICM, slow shutter speeds. We’re all for it.

Community Connection

Your people, finally. Four days building friendships, and learning and growing with women who are all there for the same thing. “It was an emotional goodbye to amazing women, but new friendships have developed and I know we’ll meet again.”

“Our three day Algonquin Retreat provided me with an appreciation for the nuances in composing a photo while encouraging me to play with camera settings.

Cobi’s open arms approach to the photography workshop was welcomed as I ventured to improve and expand on my skill as a photographer.”

Who This Is For

  • You know the basics (ISO, aperture, shutter speed) and now you’re ready to see past the snapshots.

  • Your photos aren’t turning out how you envision them. They’re just lacking something… your creative eye!

  • You’re tired of the convenience of phone photography and you want more creative options.

  • You crave photography time but needs skills, confidence, and a judgment-free space to rebuild.

  • You need dedicated lengthy time to work on skills and growth instead of one hour here and one hour there.

  • You’re ready to dust off your camera and reconnect with the photographer you used to be.

  • You don’t want anyone rushing you or making you feel like an inconvenience because you want to spend 20 minutes next to a tree looking at moss, or a flower, or a mushroom, or a rock.

  • You’re tired of technical perfection and want to start creating art.

We’re your people.

“I just attended Cobi's Northern Edge Algonquin Creative Rebellion Retreat. Just wow!!!! I love Cobi's approach to photography. Seeing Nature through our own unique perspective versus photographing scenes based on the status quo.

She helped me understand that what we capture through our lens reflects how we see our world. We are unique and how we see our world reflects all of the experiences that make us uniquely who we are as women. Cobi really lives that philosophy. Cobi's humor, authenticity, depth of knowledge on all things photography made my time with her an experience I will remember forever. We laughed often, we geeked out on photos that moved us deeply, we talked cameras and photography techniques, we walked through the forest and stopped to admire its beauty. I am grateful that Cobi is a woman I can continue to learn photography from.”

Meet Your Mentor: Cobi Sharpe

An award-winning photographer and digital photography graduate with honours, I’ve built my business on two things: advocating for women's creative time carved out between the carousel of everyone else's needs, and breaking the rules.

I believe that when we’re so focused on what we shouldn't do with our cameras, it doesn't leave much room for what we can do, and that true play is where creativity happens.

This isn't about finding out who’s the best. It’s about making you a better, more confident artist, helping you remember and nurture the photographer you used to be before life took over.

Spark isn’t about the hustle and pixel-peeping. In fact, we’re the exact opposite. We slow down, learn to move beyond looking to seeing, and treat photography as a practice for personal well-being, connection, and creative reclamation.

I believe that photography is a practice. Here is a collection of my recent work.

SD cards. Lens cleaning cloth. Flashlight or red headlamp for night photography. Umbrella (or other rain-proofing for your camera). Camera bag/backpack. What if there is still snow on the ground and ice on the lake? It’s Ontario. April is a mixed bag, especially up in Algonquin-area. We’ll be teaching you how to make images no matter where you are. We’ll embrace what is presented to us.

What is NOT included? Gratuities for the hospitality team, facilitators & guides. Wi-fi access and cell signal are generally not available for NEA’s unplugged experiences. Their property is substance, fragrance and smoking-free.

What will I learn at this retreat? This retreat is not about taking a picture using set settings. It’s about bringing out the creativity that lives inside of you. This is a very different approach from a typical camera club vibe that is built on the techniques of taking a photograph. This is about the creative ways to make a photograph based on personal experience. It’s about expressing what you see. Not copycatting what others do. We give you full permission to let go of all the expectations, so that you can freely create and grow confidence in yourself.

“I feel more confident in photographing the world around me in a way that reflects how I see my world… and the small aspects that I am curious about Nature.”

“I now have a “let’s try” approach versus a “do it right” approach.”

“My confidence in becoming more reliant and trusting of my eye and I’m more intentional in what images I try and capture.”
